4 Tips for Getting the Most Out of Invisalign

The Invisalign system is comprised of custom-made aligners that help fix misalignments within the mouth. Similar to a mouth or dental retainer, aligners are used for orthodontic treatment as a technique to move and properly align teeth for a beautiful smile. These aligners are usually made with a mold of the patient's teeth through a dentist or an orthodontist.

What can Invisalign do?

Although these aligners can correct a large majority of dental problems, they are not suitable for everyone.

Aligners can move teeth into a better position. Since they are transparent, no one will even notice you wearing the aligners. That said, Invisalign cannot fix severe or misaligned overbites. You may need braces and rubber bands to correct these issues.

If already have Invisalign, there are habits and tips you can follow to ensure that you get the most out of the realignment.

Tips for Invisalign users

1. Cleanliness

The first tip is to keep toothpaste and floss with you at all times. To ensure that the procedure moves as smoothly as possible, you have to keep your teeth as clean as possible. Keep in mind that the longer you let food particles linger in your mouth, the greater your cavity risk gets. Remove your aligners and brush your teeth after every meal. Your dentist will tell you how to clean your aligners using special products. Listen to their advice to keep your aligners free of bacteria.

2. Avoid staining foods and drinks

The second tip is to avoid teeth-staining food and beverages such as tea, coffee and chocolate. If you continually stain your teeth, you will have a lackluster smile when you finish the treatment. There is no point in attempting to fix and align your teeth if you are staining them in the process. If you do eat or drink these items, be sure to brush or at least rinse your mouth afterward.

3. Follow instructions

Change your aligners on time and follow the instructions. As easy and basic as this sounds, most people fail to follow the instructions and end up delaying their progress. Your aligners will last around two weeks, after which you will replace your old trays with a new set. Also, you cannot eat or drink while wearing your aligners, though this does not include water. Food and beverages can cause bacteria to grow on your aligners. Not only is this unhealthy, but the aligners can become yellow. Worst of all, the bacterial growth can cause bad breath.

4. Aftercare

Last but not least, follow your dentist's advice after treatment. Plenty of people ruin their progress by neglecting to maintain their smile after finishing Invisalign. Make sure to wear your retainer and communicate with your specialist. Do not miss your appointments and post-care instructions.
